Hope and opportunity are on the horizon for residents of East Berbice-Corentyne, as President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced that 1,000 new jobs will soon be created through the transformative US$285 million Berbice Port project.
The President made this major announcement during a community meeting held at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) compound in New Amsterdam, where despite persistent rainfall, scores of residents turned out to hear firsthand about the development plans unfolding in their region.

“This is the future we’re building for you,” President Ali said as he outlined a comprehensive vision for Region Six. The Berbice Port project, which is expected to break ground in the coming weeks, will be spearheaded by local shipping giants Muneshwers Limited and John Fernandes Limited, signaling robust private sector confidence in the region’s growth potential.
In addition to serving as a catalyst for employment, the Berbice Port will complement the development of a deep-water port that is currently in the planning stages. The government is working alongside international infrastructure powerhouse Bechtel to finalize this project, which is expected to open up a new wave of opportunities in transport, logistics, accommodation, real estate, and construction.
“That port will open up tremendous opportunities for transport, logistics, accommodation, real estate, [and] construction,” he revealed.
The President also spoke of the modern, four-lane high-span bridge will be constructed across the Berbice River, eliminating toll fees and enhancing regional connectivity. Plans are also underway to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Berbice, aligning with Guyana’s broader push toward a digital economy.

Major infrastructure upgrades are also on the cards, including the US$604 million Palmyra to Moleson Creek road expansion and the transformation of the Rosehall aerodrome into a municipal airport modeled after the Ogle International Airport.
Healthcare is also receiving a major boost. Two state-of-the-art regional hospitals—one in New Amsterdam and the other in Skeldon—are under construction. The New Amsterdam hospital will feature at least five operating theatres and cutting-edge diagnostic equipment, with similar services available at the Skeldon facility.
“That is the future we’re building for you. The new stadium, supported by hotels, entertainment facility, the national cultural market, the multipurpose complexes and all the other malls,l and private hospitals that will come here to support expansion and development that will take place in Region Six and New Amsterdam”
The New Amsterdam meeting was one of three held across Region Six, reinforcing the administration’s continued commitment to community-level engagement. President Ali was joined by a team of senior government officials, including Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance and the Public Service, Dr. Ashni Singh; Minister of Public Works, Hon. Juan Edghill; Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha; and Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Hon. Susan Rodrigues.
As Guyana continues on its path of rapid development, Region Six stands poised to become a hub of innovation, investment, and opportunity ushering in a new era of prosperity for its people.
