
Police in Region Six have detained three suspects as investigations continue into the alleged robbery/murder of 61-year-old businessman Chen Yongping, which occurred at Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice.
According to police, the incident took place on Monday, December 22, 2025, at about 05:00 hrs. Acting on intelligence, ranks arrested three males on Monday, December 29, 2025 including a 17-year-old from Bun Bush Dam, Canje, and two 29-year-olds from the Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme. The suspects were cautioned and interviewed, during which police say admissions were made. All three remain in custody as the investigation continues.
The case is being investigated by police attached to the Reliance Police Station District. Reports indicate that Chen Yongping and another businessman, 32-year-old Chen Dongrong, both of Chinese descent and residents of Lot 21 Cumberland Village, left their home around 03:00 hrs on the day of the incident to travel to the Port Mourant Market on the Corentyne.
Upon returning home, the two men were allegedly pounced upon by two identifiable males armed with knives. During the attack, the assailants reportedly robbed Chen Yongping of one iPhone 12 Pro Max valued at $322,000 and an undetermined sum of cash. Chen Dongrong was also robbed of $150,000 in cash and one iPhone 12 Pro Max valued at $342,000.
Both victims sustained multiple injuries and stab wounds during the ordeal and were rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for medical attention. Chen Yongping later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment. Chen Dongrong, who reportedly suffered a fractured skull, was admitted to Ward 8 but was subsequently discharged.
The body of Chen Yongping was taken to a funeral parlour pending a post-mortem examination. On December 24, 2025, between 09:00 hrs and 09:30 hrs, a post-mortem examination was conducted at Bailey’s Funeral Home by Government Pathologist Dr. V. Brijmohan. The body was identified by the deceased’s wife, Wu Xiao Fen, in the presence of police ranks.
The cause of death was determined to be shock and haemorrhage due to three stab wounds. Following the examination, the body was handed over to relatives for burial.
Police have indicated that investigations are ongoing as they continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deadly robbery.
