A 65-year-old man, Gokaran Lackram, tragically lost his life following a fatal accident on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, on the Lichfield Public Road, West Coast Berbice. Lackram, a resident of Cotton Tree Village, was the driver of motor lorry #GAE 4037 when his vehicle collided with a motor tractor and trailer, resulting in his death.
The accident occurred around 17:45 hours as Lackram was heading east along the northern side of the road, negotiating a right bend. Motor tractor #35473, driven by 52-year-old Sherlock George of Lichfield Village, allegedly failed to stop while exiting an access road and entered the path of the lorry. The lorry collided with the right side of the trailer, causing severe damage to both vehicles.
Lackram, along with two porters who were seated in the tray of the lorry, were rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, Lackram succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment. The two porters, 65-year-old Havano Ally and 35-year-old Mohamed Ramall, were admitted to the hospital in stable condition.
The driver of the tractor underwent a breathalyzer test, which confirmed that no alcohol was present in his system. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with police officers, including Inspector Massay, visiting the scene and canvassing the area for CCTV footage.
