Police are investigating a serious accident that occurred on Monday, March 17, 2025, at approximately 14:50 hrs on the Cumberland Public Road, East Canje, Berbice. The incident involved a motorcycle and an 8-year-old pedestrian.
According to reports, the accident involved Motorcycle #CP 4942, owned and driven by 19-year-old Ashwindev Persaud of Lot 20 Fourth Street, Adelphi Settlement Village, East Canje, Berbice. The pedestrian has been identified as Sherry Fraser, an 8-year-old student of Cumberland Primary School, who resides at Lot 201 Victoria Street, Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Persaud was proceeding north along the western driving lane of Cumberland Public Road, allegedly at a fast rate, when he collided with Fraser, who was using the pedestrian crossing from east to west. Persaud was reportedly wearing his safety helmet at the time of the accident.
The impact caused Fraser to fall onto the roadway, resulting in injuries to her head and body. She was quickly assisted by the driver and public-spirited citizens and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she was treated for lacerations to her head. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was subsequently referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical attention.
A breathalyzer test conducted on Persaud returned a reading of zero micrograms. He is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
