A fire of unknown origin has completely destroyed the St Angela’s Girls’ Hostel in Karasabai Village, Region 9 – Upper Takutu Upper Essequibo earlier today.
Persons in the area were alert about the fire at about 1 hour 45 and they rushed to the scene to render assistance.
The hostel was the home to over 15 girls from nearby villages, all of whom escaped unharmed.
Meanwhile, a full team of technical officials and a cabinet member are enroute to the area, a statement from the Department of Public Information states.
“His Excellency, President Dr Irfaan Ali spoke with the Regional Executive Officer (REO) who informed that the fire occurred this morning at approximately 3:00am. The REO has reported that everyone is safe.”
The public will be kept informed as information on the circumstances becomes available.
