The Corriverton Mayor and Town Council has served notices to vendors plying their trade opposite the recently completed Recreational Park at Corriverton in Region Six on Wednesday.
According to the document, the vendors were given 48 hours to remove their belongings.
Speaking with thenewsdeskgy.com, several vendors explained that they have been utilizing the area for decades and while they were served notices before, they were still allowed to continue vending at the location under the past council.
One woman who gave her name as Mohandai Bisnauth, noted that she is a simple parent has been vending in the area for the past ten years to provide for herself and family. She explained that she is willing to move her stall a few feet away from the roadway.
Another vendor, Tamika Fraser, told thenewsdeskgy.com that while she had only been vending in the area for just over eight years, she is willing to abide by whatever decision is taken, but noted that there were no consultations between officials from the council and the vendors. She said they were just served with the notice which asked them to move within 48 hours.
When contacted, the Mayor of Corriverton, Imran Amin said that the recent notice to the vendors to have them removed from the roadside is not the first ever served to them. He explained that a similar exercise was done under the previous council. Amin noted that this recent action is to avoid the selling of illegal drugs and alcohol in close proximity to the Recreational Park.
