BY COURDEL JONES – In a promising development, the government has unveiled substantial investments in Baracara Village, situated along the Canje River in Region Six. The primary objective of this initiative is to reinvigorate agriculture in the community, offering new prospects for the residents.
Presidential Visit and Warm Welcome
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali recently graced Baracara Village with his presence, receiving a warm and enthusiastic welcome from the local residents who gathered in significant numbers for a community meeting.
Expanding Red Bean Production Dramatically
During this community meeting, President Ali revealed a groundbreaking commitment to agriculture. The government will invest in state-of-the-art machinery to prepare a vast 400 acres of land for red bean production. This figure greatly surpasses the original plan of cultivating only 25 acres, highlighting the government’s dedication to agricultural expansion.
Empowering Aquaculture through Solar Freezer
The government is also extending its support to the local aquaculture industry. A substantial investment is earmarked for the acquisition of a large solar freezer, providing essential infrastructure for fish storage.
Nurturing Youth Innovation and Sustainable Agriculture
President Ali underscored the importance of nurturing the innovative spirit among young individuals. The government aims to open up natural areas for aquaculture, promoting sustainable agricultural practices that move beyond reliance on seasonal catches. This initiative promises to yield diverse products, including Patwa, Hassar, Hourie, and Tilapia.
Reviving the Livestock Industry
Reviving the once-thriving livestock industry in Baracara is also on the government’s agenda. As part of this effort, the community is set to receive five heifers and two high-breed rams, injecting new life into this sector.
Infrastructure Enhancement and Solar Home Systems
Not only will the government invest in agriculture, but it will also carry out essential work on two major creeks in the region, further supporting residents and local farmers. Additionally, each household in the village will reap the benefits of the ‘30,000 solar home systems’ project, with plans to allocate 150 units to serve the entire community by year-end.
Tangible Economic Gains and Optimism
The President’s announcements were met with enthusiasm and optimism, underscoring the government’s commitment to providing the community with the necessary tools to enhance productivity. The substantial work undertaken on a significant access canal in the community has already delivered impressive results, with residents reporting earnings of $10 million, showcasing the tangible economic impact of government initiatives.
Pledge for Productivity and Support from Officials
Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to restoring Baracara to its former levels of productivity. He assured residents of added value for their products and efforts to secure high-income opportunities and markets for local goods.
Joining the President at this significant event were Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, Lionel Wordsworth, underlining the government’s comprehensive and collective commitment to the well-being and prosperity of Baracara Village.
