The opening weekend of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and Women Football Association (WFA) Women’s League Division One brought an exhilarating display of football, highlighted by the impressive performances of Guyana Defence Force, Potaro Strikers, and Guyana Police Force, with a remarkable total of 40 goals scored.
Dominant Victory for Guyana Defence Force
Guyana Defence Force exhibited their dominance with a resounding 13-0 victory against Fruta Conquerors on Saturday, October 14, at the GFF National Training Centre (NTC) in Providence, East Bank Demerara. Glendy Lewis emerged as the top scorer, astonishingly netting five goals. Abioce Heywood and Glengie Lewis made significant contributions with two goals each, while Yeneira Kenswil, Kellyann Niles, Odessa Romeo, and Niomie Williams each scored one goal.
Potaro Strikers Shine in Opening Match
In the first match of the evening, Potaro Strikers displayed an outstanding performance by keeping Santos at bay and securing a comprehensive 12-0 victory. The goals were distributed among various players, with Olivia Oselmo, Solomie Obermuller, and Tytheon Jones each contributing three goals. Latoya Williams, Duane Williams, and Anis Livan added one goal each to seal the victory.
Guyana Police Force Dominates on Sunday
The excitement continued on Sunday, October 15, as the Guyana Police Force Football Club demonstrated its prowess by scoring 15 unanswered goals against Pakuri Jaguars. Jennell Edmonson, Melina Larson, and Akeelah Vancounten each scored three goals, while Shanic Thornhill and Lakeisha Williams added two goals to the scoreline. Angelisa Larson and Colette Rutherford contributed with one goal each.
The GFF noted, “This marks an exceptional beginning for the Women’s League Division One. Fans can anticipate witnessing a remarkable level of competition over the coming weeks as teams strive to claim the title of the inaugural Women’s League Division One champions.”
Women’s League Division One Teams
The Women’s League Division One comprises seven football clubs, including current and former national players. These clubs are Santos, Potaro Strikers, Fruta Conquerors, Guyana Defence Force, Pakuri Jaguars, and Guyana Police Force football clubs.
The league offers attractive cash prizes, with the champions set to receive G$300,000. Additionally, the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth-placed clubs will be rewarded with cash prizes of G$200,000, G$100,000, G$75,000, G$50,000, and G$25,000, respectively.
The Women’s League Division One is scheduled to conclude on November 11 and serves as a platform for the top female clubs selected from the nine Regional Member Associations of the federation.
