Since assuming office in 2020, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has successfully constructed 822 community roads in Region Six, as revealed by Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill. The residents of various communities in the region are enjoying the benefits of these roads, traveling in comfort.
Minister Edghill highlighted that 13.7 kilometers of the Black Bush Polder main access road have already been completed, and an additional $900 million will be allocated by the end of the year to fund two other sections of the road.
In the ongoing efforts to uplift the region, Minister Edghill stated, “In Region Six, the government has done a tremendous amount of work to move this region out of its state of depression and neglect. President Ali has led the front in giving a vision, and providing the mechanism that has empowered people to get their lives back, to make their families happy, and to bring prosperity to all our people.”
Two contracts for the main access road will encompass another four kilometers, with the goal of completing some 17 kilometers of the main access road by early 2024.
Furthermore, the minister announced the awarding of contracts for an additional 286 roads in Region Six, with many of them slated for Black Bush Polder.
In addition to road infrastructure, approximately $650 million is being invested in maintaining sea and river defenses, including new projects within Region Six for the current year.
These developments align with substantial projects aimed at transforming the region, such as the expansion of the Corentyne Highway, from Palmyra to Crabwood Creek, into a four-lane road.
Regarding the region’s aviation sector, Minister Edghill mentioned the government’s consideration of constructing a municipal airport at Palmyra to accommodate ongoing expansion.
Minister Edghill was part of a ministerial team, led by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, on a two-day outreach to the region.
