Minister Kwame McCoy, within the Office of the Prime Minister, responsible for Public Affairs, has stressed the pivotal role of broadcasting entities in Guyana, calling on them to uphold the highest standards of responsibility in their operations.
Addressing a stakeholders’ forum at the Herdmanston Lodge on Wednesday morning, Minister McCoy emphasized the importance of broadcasters operating at a level that garners respect both locally and internationally.
“We aim to collaborate with our broadcasters, but as we contemplate our societal goals and the need for improvements in our broadcasting landscape, individual broadcasters must consider how they can contribute to their role and development. This way, we can operate at the highest level within our society,” encouraged the Public Affairs Minister.
Acknowledging the efforts of the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority (GNBA), he commended their endeavors in engaging stakeholders to elevate broadcasting standards.
As Guyana continues to progress, Minister McCoy highlighted the significant responsibility of broadcasters to deliver content free from misinformation, disinformation, and incitement to violence.
Despite ongoing notifications of infractions, the minister expressed concern over recurring lapses and reminded broadcasters of their duty to educate, inform, and entertain responsibly. He cautioned against disseminating misleading narratives on sensitive issues.
“We have a responsibility to our people to ensure that the content we provide for education, information, and entertainment helps them grow, edifies them, and elevates them intellectually,” he stressed.
Minister McCoy assured continued government support for GNBA, reaffirming the commitment to achieving and maintaining the highest broadcasting standards for the people of Guyana.
