Shawn Collins, a 25-year-old laborer hailing from Charlestown, Georgetown, found himself in custody after being discovered in possession of a loaded firearm on Thursday night at the Pouderoyen Public Road, West Bank Demerara.
According to a report from Police Headquarters, officers were conducting mobile patrols in the area when they noticed Shawn Collins and Steffon Howard, a 23-year-old laborer from East La Penitence, Georgetown, behaving suspiciously.
Both individuals were subjected to a search. Inside a lunch pack that Collins was carrying over his shoulder, the officers uncovered a black 9mm semi-automatic pistol, with its serial number filed off. The firearm was accompanied by a magazine containing fifteen 9mm rounds of ammunition.
Collins was apprised of the offense he had committed and duly cautioned. His reported response was, “Officer, I have this for my protection.” Consequently, he was placed under arrest.
The police then escorted both individuals to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police outpost. During this time, a call was received by Collins. An officer answered the call and heard someone saying, “Hey, I’ve arrived at the location where you all are.”
In response, the police officers proceeded to the Pouderoyen Public Road, where they encountered Shawn Dos Santos, a 27-year-old laborer residing in the South Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown. He was found sitting on a Grey 110cc Honda motorcycle.
When Dos Santos’ cellphone rang, and the police officers called back the number, they realized it was his phone. He was then questioned by the authorities, and his responses were inconsistent. Consequently, Dos Santos was also taken into custody and escorted to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police outpost.
The three suspects were subsequently transported to the Leonora Police Station, where they were detained pending further investigations into the matter.
