Efforts are being made to recover the remains of several miners who were buried alive this after when a mining pit collapsed in the Matawai area in neighboring Suriname.
News coming out of that country states that the incident took place at about 15 hours 30 today in the area where a gold field had been discovered and large number of miners had moved into the area.
Up to this evening, an excavator was on site making effort to retrieved those persons trapped beneath the rubbles. It was reported that approximately 21 persons had been working at the location but so far 14 bodies have been recovered.
The police and several emergency services are presently at the location providing support while the Surinamese Government has launched a major operation comprising the Ministers of Natural Resources, Defense, Justice and Police, Regional Development and Sport and Finance and Planning who are in the area engaging in the search and rescue operation.
Suriname’s ice President, Ronnie Brunswijk who visited the area engaged with officials from the gold company to discuss safety and other measures for gold miners in the area.
