The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) has reported significant progress in the installation of additional generation sets at the Columbia substation, a development set to strengthen the utility company’s power-generation capacity. In a social media update, GPL shared that the ongoing work is part of the efforts to incrementally augment the power generation for the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS).
Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, recently affirmed that the installation of new generators and engines is underway and is expected to contribute to a notable increase in the country’s overall power generation capacity. The positive strides come in response to frequent power outages attributed to the growing demand for electricity amid rapid national development.
Approximately two weeks ago, a vessel delivered engines with a total capacity of 28.9 megawatts (MW) along with critical components for power generation. This procurement aligns with Guyana’s proactive approach to address power challenges and enhance the reliability of its power supply.
Faced with a historic peak in demand of 182 megawatts at the end of September this year, GPL recognized the need to strengthen its power-generation infrastructure. Anticipating increased demand in 2022, the government initiated an early procurement process, resulting in the recent acquisition of 28.9 megawatts from Apan Energy Services.
This investment, amounting to US$27.5 million, is a strategic move by the government to meet the rising demand for power, minimize disruptions, and ensure a more resilient power supply from the country’s primary power supplier. As GPL continues to advance these initiatives, The News Desk remains committed to providing updates on the progress and impact on Guyana’s power infrastructure.
