Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, announced on Thursday that the 100 percent completion of the temporary bridge is a significant milestone in the construction of the four-lane high span New Demerara River Bridge. The revelation came during an inspection of the entire western section of the construction site.
Minister Edghill, joined by project engineers, contractors, consultants, and other engineers, received a progress report on the ongoing works. Emphasizing the time-sensitive nature of the project, he highlighted the completion of the temporary bridge and the ongoing installation of platforms needed for the project’s continuation.
The minister further explained that the next landmark would be the pouring of concrete to accommodate the 38 piles forming the platform. The batching plants on both sides of the river have already seen the pouring of concrete on the eastern side, with the benchmark time for starting the pouring on the 38 piles on the western side set for January 6.
Adhering to international standards, a team, including the project engineer, assistant engineer, and consultant, traveled to China to inspect facilities where materials are being fabricated before shipment. Minister Edghill underscored the focus on maintaining an optimal level of material supply as a crucial aspect of the project.
Regarding safety measures, the minister assured that all safety issues have been addressed, enabling the work to proceed day and night. The contractor has implemented necessary platforms for efficient movement in and out of the construction site.
The project, undertaken by China Railway Construction (International) Limited (CRCCL), aims to complete the 2.6-kilometer crossing linking Nandy Park on the East Bank of Demerara with La Grange on the West Bank by the end of 2024. The bridge will feature four lanes, with a total width of 23.6 meters, including the median, shoulders, and four lanes, ensuring safe and effective traffic flow.
