Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton has ousted APNU+AFC Member of Parliament (MP) Jermaine Figueira from his position in the Shadow Cabinet, where Figueira previously served as the Shadow Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport. Norton informed Figueira of his removal during a recent meeting with other opposition MPs.
Nima Flue Bess, a political newcomer, is set to take over Figueira’s role ahead of the upcoming presentation of the national budget by Senior Minister Dr. Ashni Singh.
The decision to strip Figueira of his portfolio reportedly stems from a disagreement with Norton over a handshake with President Irfaan Ali. Figueira shook the President’s hand, a move that apparently clashed with Norton’s refusal to do the same. Norton has faced criticism for his stance, with some labeling him as “immature.”
In response to his removal, Figueira raised questions in a letter to the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the APNU. He speculated whether his removal was a consequence of his independent thinking and refusal to conform or if it was linked to his disagreement with Norton over the handshake policy.
Figueira defended his decision to shake the President’s hand, emphasizing it as a sensible and courteous gesture in the contemporary political and diplomatic landscape.
Additionally, Figueira highlighted his contributions to his constituency in his letter, questioning the party about its ability to secure funding for consistent social and political programs. He challenged other members to showcase similar achievements and questioned the visibility and impact of other opposition MPs in the country.
