A tragic birthday celebration turned into heartbreak on Sunday, September 8, 2024, when two young girls reportedly drowned at Enchanter Creek, located along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
The incident occurred at approximately 15:30h, claiming the lives of Akira La Rose, 10, of Lot 95 Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, and Joylyn Jack, 11, of Lot 1726 Tuschen, West Coast Demerara.
In an official statement, police revealed that the girls, accompanied by family members, had been at Enchanter Creek to celebrate Akira La Rose’s 10th birthday. Among the family members present were Allison Klass, the 53-year-old grandmother of the two deceased girls, and Oswald Jack, the father of Joylyn Jack.
According to reports, the two children were playing in the creek when they were discovered missing. After an alarm was raised, a frantic search ensued. Tragically, both girls were found unresponsive in the water.
They were rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre by a combination of police officers and civilians. However, upon arrival, they were pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Preliminary examinations by the police revealed no marks of violence on the bodies, but an official post-mortem examination will be conducted at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home to determine the exact cause of death.
The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
