In line with the Ministry of Education’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusivity in the education sector, six visually impaired trainee teachers at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) have been provided with laptops, enhancing their access to learning resources.
On Friday, the Office of the Assistant Chief Education Officer (SEND) facilitated a collaboration between the Guyana Council of Organizations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD) and CPCE’s Student Services Department to deliver the laptops, equipped with advanced text-to-speech software tailored to support visually impaired learners.
The six trainees, all enrolled in the Associate Degree in Disability Studies program, will benefit from a flexible 2-3 year study period, allowing them to progress at their own pace. To further support their academic success, the CPCE has also arranged for tutoring services to ensure they receive personalized guidance throughout their studies.
This initiative not only reflects the Ministry of Education’s dedication to creating an inclusive educational environment but also aligns with the Government of Guyana’s broader commitment to empowering persons with disabilities. It comes on the heels of the 2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed under the theme “United in Action to Rescue and Achieve the SDGs for, with, and by Persons with Disabilities.”
The initiative underscores the government’s efforts to ensure equal opportunities for all, particularly in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
