The People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government has made significant strides in improving the livelihoods of residents in Baracara, a remote riverain community up the Canje Creek, through a series of developmental projects aimed at boosting agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, and education. These investments have had a profound impact on the residents, many of whom have expressed their gratitude for the government’s continued support.
Burnell Amsterdam, a long-time resident of Baracara, highlighted the tangible benefits of the government’s efforts, particularly in improving the community’s infrastructure and agricultural capacity. “The government has taken us from one stage to another, and our heads are high above water,” Amsterdam shared, underscoring the transformative changes that have taken place in the community over the years.
Among the key projects undertaken by the government are enhanced drainage and irrigation systems for local farmers, the provision of much-needed farming equipment—including a tractor, plough, pump and trailer—improved healthcare services, and better access to quality education.
Amsterdam praised the government for its consistent engagement with the community, noting that officials frequently visit to assess needs and provide support. “Almost every month, somebody comes in here, giving us the kind of support we need, and wherever we lack, the government is helping us,” he added.
Amsterdam emphasized that the community’s support for the PPP/C government is strong, with residents valuing the progress being made without regard to race or other divisions. “We will not be looking at race or gender or whatever. Who is doing good, we want to give them the praise,”he said.
Conroy Lafleur, another Baracara resident, echoed Amsterdam’s sentiments, stating that over his 32 years living in the community, he has witnessed significant improvements across all sectors. He commended the government for consistently delivering on its promises, resulting in meaningful changes that have uplifted the lives of residents.
Similarly, Glinton Lafleur, a native of Baracara, reflected on the community’s progress, noting the shift from manual labor to more efficient farming methods due to the government’s provision of modern equipment. “Looking back to where the community was and where it is today, I would say the government is doing great things for the people of Baracara,” Lafleur said.
He recalled how the community once relied on slashing and burning vegetation for farming, but with the introduction of a tractor and trailer, they are now able to plough the land more effectively.
Lafleur further highlighted the impact of these investments on the agricultural sector, predicting a significant increase in production. “With the inputs made in agriculture, the community will be producing more than 75 percent of what it used to before,” he remarked.
The developmental projects spearheaded by the PPP/C administration have not only improved living conditions but also empowered the people of Baracara to take charge of their future. As the government continues to deliver on its promises, residents remain hopeful that the progress will sustain, ensuring that Baracara continues to thrive.
