Police are currently investigating a fatal accident that occurred around 14:00 hrs today (Saturday) on the #28 Public Road, West Coast Berbice, resulting in the death of 63-year-old pedal cyclist Standford Benjamin of #28 Village, WCB.
The incident involved motor car #PZZ 7256, driven by 65-year-old Malcolm Nurse of New Amsterdam, Berbice, and Benjamin, who was riding his bicycle along the southern side of the roadway.
According to initial investigations, both the pedal cyclist and the car were heading west along the same side of the road. The driver of the vehicle, Malcolm Nurse, reported that while attempting to pass Benjamin, the cyclist suddenly swerved into the path of his car, leading to a collision.
Upon impact, Benjamin was thrown onto the roadway, sustaining severe injuries. He was quickly picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where medical staff made efforts to save him. Unfortunately, Benjamin succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The police have launched an investigation into the accident as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
