Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred around 2:45 AM on Sunday, October 20, 2024, on the Tuschen Public Road, East Bank Essequibo.
The accident involved two vehicles: motorcar #PSS 8190, whose owner and driver remain unknown, and motorcar #PRR 7218, owned by a 33-year-old resident of Meten-Meer-Zorg. The victim, an unidentified male of Amerindian descent, was a pedestrian at the time of the incident.
According to police reports, the pedestrian was standing on the southern side of the road with a group of people before attempting to cross from south to north. As he crossed, he stepped into the path of motorcar #PSS 8190, which was speeding west along the center of the road. The impact flung the pedestrian into the air, and he landed on the rear left side of motorcar #PRR 7218, which was parked on the southern parapet facing east.
After the collision, motorcar #PSS 8190 briefly stopped a distance away and returned to the scene. However, when a group of bystanders approached the vehicle, the driver fled the scene, heading east.
The pedestrian was picked up unconscious by police and transported to Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Efforts to locate motorcar #PSS 8190 have so far been unsuccessful. Police investigations are ongoing.
