Police in Berbice have detained a man suspected of involvement in the fatal attack on 18-year-old Parmand Pertab, a construction worker from Hampshire Village, Corentyne, Berbice. Pertab and another individual allegedly attempted to rob a goldsmith at the Port Mourant Market last Saturday.
Region Six Commander, Shivpersaud Bacchus, confirmed that one suspect is now in custody, and the police are in the process of seeking legal advice before any charges are laid.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on Pertab by Government Pathologist Dr. V. Bridgemohan at Bailey’s Funeral Home in No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice. The examination determined the cause of death to be shock and hemorrhage due to multiple incised wounds. Pertab’s body has since been released to his family for burial.
According to police reports, on the morning of October 26, Pertab, reportedly armed with a cutlass, and his accomplice, allegedly armed with a handgun, entered a jewelry shop inside the Port Mourant Market. Pertab allegedly attacked the jeweler’s assistant while his accomplice ordered others to lie on the ground. The pair then stole jewelry and attempted to flee.
The commotion drew the attention of market vendors and bystanders. Pertab’s accomplice discharged three rounds in an attempt to escape, injuring one individual before managing to flee the scene. Pertab, however, was confronted by members of the public and was subsequently taken into custody by the police, who also recovered the stolen items.
Both Pertab and the injured bystander, identified as Mark Lovell, were transported to the Port Mourant Hospital. Lovell received treatment and discharged himself, while Pertab was later pronounced deceased.
The investigation is ongoing as police continue to gather evidence and seek justice in the case.
