A Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne man has tragically died hours after being involved in a fight with a drinking companion at a local supermarket.
The deceased has been identified as 63-year-old Amrit Persaud Singh of Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne, Berbice. According to reports, the altercation occurred on Friday, but Singh passed away on Saturday while being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Singh’s sister, 52-year-old Babita Singh, recounted the devastating sequence of events to The News Desk. Babita shared that she first learned of her brother’s condition on Saturday while at the market when her nephew’s wife called.
“She then said my brother is no more, and I said, ‘Which one of my brothers?’ and she said Amrit. Anyways, me start to cry, and my two friends who know me come, and they rescue me and put me to sit and so on, and I call a taxi and go home,” Babita disclosed.
However, within half an hour, Babita said her nephew called to clarify that Amrit was not dead but had been struck on the head and was unconscious. He was being rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital.
“When I got there, I saw my brother lying in the ICU, unresponsive but panting for breath. Moments later, he was rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital and then prepared for transfer to the Georgetown Public Hospital. But he died on the way,” Babita said tearfully.
The News Desk understands that Amrit had been involved in a fight with another man identified as “Ano” at the supermarket. The altercation reportedly stemmed from a misunderstanding while the two were drinking. During the fight, the suspect allegedly struck Amrit in the head with a rum bottle.
Babita explained that she only learned about the fight after seeing her brother at the hospital. She is now demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
“I’m not saying my brother was perfect, but me know my brother is not a fighting person. Me know that my brother use to drink, but my brother don’t go into nobody way. So, at least, I would glad to know what is the reason he hit my brother. You mean to tell me one lash like that and my brother gonna unconscious, and me never hear one word from my brother until his last breath,” she said.
Police have since arrested the suspect, “Ano,” who remains in custody pending a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Investigations are ongoing.
