Anderson Cyril, a 28-year-old food vendor from Lot 362 Tabatinga, Lethem, Central Rupununi, has been granted bail in the sum of $400,000 following his appearance at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court earlier today.
Represented by attorney-at-law Bernard Da Silva, Cyril faced Magistrate Omadat Chandan, who granted bail with conditions requiring him to report weekly to the Lethem Police Station. The decision came after the court considered several factors raised by the defense.
The prosecution was unprepared, with no case file presented, and there was no certainty of a trial date or even a timeline for the disclosure of statements, raising concerns about prolonged delays. Cyril’s attorney argued that under Article 144 of the Constitution, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty and is entitled to a fair hearing within a reasonable time. Additionally, the defense highlighted that there was no strong evidence pointing to a conviction at this stage of the proceedings.
The attorney also noted that Cyril was not considered a flight risk, as he is a Guyanese citizen with strong ties to the community, including a pregnant wife and a minor daughter. These factors led Magistrate Chandan to overrule the prosecution’s objections and grant bail.
Cyril was arrested on November 10, 2024, for the offence of Robbery Under Arms, contrary to Section 222(c) of the Criminal Law Offences Act, Chapter 8:01. He was accused of being involved in an armed robbery and first appeared in court on November 13, 2024. During that appearance, he was not required to plead and was remanded to prison.
