The Government of Guyana is accelerating its efforts to provide housing opportunities nationwide with the construction of 100 three-bedroom bungalow houses at Palmyra, Corentyne. This area is poised to become a central hub of activity in Region Six.
Minister of Housing and Water, Hon. Collin Croal, recently visited the construction site and engaged with the nine contractors responsible for the project, which began in October 2024. The homes are on track for completion by March 31, 2025.
During his visit, Minister Croal expressed satisfaction with the progress and announced that pre-qualification for purchasing these units will open in the coming weeks. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit the Ministry’s Regional Office to begin the application process.
Among the contractors is Omindra Sookraj, who is responsible for constructing 12 of the houses. He shared that this is his first major housing-related project and described it as a significant opportunity, not only for himself but also for his employees, who now have steady work as a result.
Initially, the plan was to construct young professional houses at Palmyra. However, after careful analysis, the decision was made to build three-bedroom bungalows similar to those constructed in Georgetown. Minister Croal explained that this adjustment considered the cost of transporting building materials to the region.
“We have to be mindful of the costs involved. A house in Georgetown cannot be priced the same here due to transportation expenses for materials. After conducting a study, we decided to replicate the three-bedroom bungalows being built in Georgetown. All 100 houses will be completed by March 31, some even earlier,” Minister Croal said.
The Housing Minister emphasized that the block allocated for young professional houses at Palmyra remains intact. Based on demand for the current bungalows, the next phase of construction will feature elevated designs to cater to varying preferences.
Each unit will cost under $14 million, inclusive of the land. Minister Croal also commended contractors for employing skilled workers from the local community, aligning with the government’s housing initiative to create employment opportunities while addressing housing needs.
This project reflects the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for citizens by providing affordable and modern housing solutions.
