Three Guyanese law students have made their country proud by winning the prestigious Lex Caribbean Client Interviewing Competition, held at the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica on Friday.
The Hugh Wooding Law School team, consisting of Jealisha Leung, Ariana Ramdharie, and Phillipe Walker, demonstrated exceptional skill and professionalism throughout the competition. The team was guided by lecturers Ms. Kavita Deochan and Mr. Jason Nathu, whose mentorship contributed significantly to their success.
The Lex Caribbean Client Interviewing Competition is a hallmark event that tests participants on key aspects of legal practice, including taking instructions, identifying legal issues, providing sound advice, and building attorney-client relationships grounded in trust and respect. The competition brings together students from the three law schools under the Council of Legal Education: the Eugene Dupuch Law School in The Bahamas, the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago, and the Norman Manley Law School in Jamaica.
All three team members are first-year law students at the Hugh Wooding Law School, having matriculated from the University of Guyana (UG) in September 2024. Among the team’s accomplishments, Phillipe Walker stands out as the valedictorian of UG’s Law Department for the Class of 2024.
The Guyana Jurisdictional Committee (GJC), which represents Guyanese students at the Hugh Wooding Law School, praised the team for their achievement. In a statement, the GJC expressed, “We extend hearty congratulations to our esteemed students for making our school and Guyana very proud.”
The GJC is a Trinidad-based student body that supports Guyanese students pursuing their Legal Education Certificate. It is currently led by Chairpersons Mr. Rodley Mathoo and Ms. Ruth Wilson, along with several executive members.
