Police are investigating the alleged murder of 15-year-old Sudesh Singh, called Joel, of Lot 71 Last Street, Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, which occurred around 14:30 hrs on Friday at his home. The suspect is Singh’s 50-year-old stepfather, who is currently in police custody.
Investigations revealed that Singh lived with his 35-year-old unemployed mother, Roshanini Surujballi, and the suspect in the lower flat of a two-storey wooden and concrete house.
On the day of the incident, Singh reportedly used his stepfather’s bicycle, which caused the chain to slip. This led to a heated argument between the two. The suspect allegedly ran into the kitchen, armed himself with a cutlass, and attacked the teen, chopping him several times, including to the neck. Singh collapsed under the house, bleeding profusely.
The suspect then left the scene and went to the Leonora Police Station, where he reported the matter. He was arrested and remains in custody pending further investigations.
When police arrived, Singh was found lying motionless on his back under the house with visible wounds to his neck. A cutlass was recovered nearby. The crime scene was processed, and several residents were questioned.
Singh’s body was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. It was later transferred to the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour for storage, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
