President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has announced that every person living with a disability (PWD) in Guyana will receive a one-off grant of $50,000 before the end of this month. The initiative, unveiled on Wednesday in observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, will provide $1.4 billion in direct support to more than 27,000 Guyanese.
The national observance, held at the Railway Courtyard in Georgetown, was organised by the Office of the President in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady. The event celebrated dignity, inclusion, and the collective responsibility of building a society where every citizen can thrive.
In his address, President Ali noted that disabilities, whether congenital, acquired, temporary, or lifelong, form part of the human experience and touch families in every community. He stressed that persons living with disabilities should never be viewed through a lens of deficit, but as individuals who bring unique perspectives and knowledge to the national landscape.
Grounding his remarks in values of faith, empathy, and community, the President urged Guyanese to “bear one another’s burdens,” emphasizing that true national development must be measured by how well society supports its most vulnerable.
“Regardless of where you sit, in public or private life, we must make it a collective responsibility to uplift those who are mourning, struggling, or underserved,” President Ali said.
The initiative is expected to bring significant relief to thousands of households.
