A devastating fire, suspected to have been maliciously set by unknown persons, has left a family of four from Adelphi New Scheme, East Canje Berbice homeless. The fire, which completely engulfed their one-bedroom home, occurred just after 6:30 PM on Sunday, leaving the family in shock and distress.
41-year-old Rookmanie Nowrang was at her mother’s house with her two children while her husband, 57-year-old Saeed Abdul Jahoor, was at work when the tragedy unfolded. Recalling the horrifying moment, Nowrang shared that she rushed back to her home after hearing neighbors scream, fearing that she was still inside. However, by the time she arrived, her home was already consumed by flames.
Nowrang described the painful sight of losing everything she had worked for. “When I reach, I see the fire burning up everything we had. I lost two TVs, a dresser, bed, freezer, and divider,” she recounted. Tragically, she was unable to save any of her belongings, and the generator the family relied on, since the house had no electricity, was also destroyed in the blaze.
Her husband, Saeed Abdul Jahoor, expressed his deep sorrow and suspicion of foul play, though he noted that they had no known conflicts with anyone in the area. “Just three months ago, someone broke into our home and ransacked it, but they didn’t manage to take anything because my wife came home just in time.”
Visibly emotional, Jahoor explained that the family is now staying with relatives, but the space is cramped and uncomfortable. The couple, left without a home, are appealing for assistance to help rebuild their lives. “We have nowhere to go. We are hoping that good-hearted people can help us rebuild,” Jahoor said.
Anyone willing to assist the family can reach them at 604-2933.
The Guyana Fire Service is continuing the investigation into the cause of the fire.
