An Alness businesswoman was attacked and robbed by two armed bandits last evening at Alness Village on the Corentyne, where she operates her roadside provision business.
The woman, identified as Basmattie Mangru, recounted the ordeal to the media. She shared that at around 7:45 p.m., she was serving a customer when she heard three gunshots. As she turned to investigate, she found a masked man standing beside her.
Mangru described the silent encounter: ‘It was two small persons, but they tied up their faces with only their eyes showing. They walked up to me, grabbed my apron with the day’s sales, and ran off through a street at the back. Nobody can catch them like that.’
At the time of the incident, Mangru was assisting a customer, while three others who work with her were helping to pack up for the day. She added, ‘The patrol came, but by then, the men were already gone. They picked up the shells and saw the holes in the zinc where they had fired.’
Mangru, who recently lost her husband ten weeks ago, sells along the roadside to support her children who are still in school.
Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing.
