Police in Regional Division #7 are investigating an alleged acid attack on 38-year-old Jermaine Thornhill, a driver from 1 ¾ Miles, Potaro Road, Bartica, Essequibo River. The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, around 9:30 p.m. at Thornhill’s residence, where he was celebrating his birthday with family and friends.
The suspect, identified as Wayne Johnson, also known as “Wayne,” is currently on the run. According to initial investigations, Thornhill was at home with the suspect, relatives, and friends, consuming alcohol as part of his birthday celebration.
At some point during the evening, Thornhill had a misunderstanding with his wife, and Johnson allegedly intervened, despite being asked by Thornhill not to get involved. This led to an argument, and Johnson was asked to leave the gathering.
Johnson left but returned about five minutes later. Approaching Thornhill, Johnson reportedly said, “Thornhill, look this acid,” before throwing a liquid from a container at him. Thornhill quickly turned, causing the corrosive substance to splash onto his back and hands. Johnson then fled the scene on a motorcycle.
Thornhill, in severe pain, was rushed to the Bartica Regional Hospital by his wife and relatives. He is currently in stable condition, nursing burn injuries to his back and hands.
The police are actively searching for the suspect, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
