28-year-old Dinesh Persaud of Blairmont, Number One Settlement, appeared at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court earlier today, charged with stealing a motor car.
The accused appeared before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir, where he was informed of the offence which alleged that he stole a motor car on Boxing Day, 26th December, 2024.
According to the charge, Persaud stole the Fielder Wagon, registration number PAG 8827, which belonged to Ramgsch Dasrat, a contractor from D’Edward Village, West Bank Berbice.
Police Prosecutor Corporal Garfield Edwards informed the court that the stolen vehicle was recovered on New Year’s Day in Diamond, East Bank Demerara, in Persaud’s possession.
The vehicle, valued at $3.1 million, had been left unattended by the owner, who had left the keys in the ignition while making a purchase at a shop in D’Edward Village. It was at this moment that Persaud allegedly took the opportunity to steal the car.
Corporal Edwards also requested that bail be refused, highlighting that Persaud is a repeat offender. He noted that the accused had previously been convicted of a similar offense, where a car was stolen on the West Coast of Berbice and later found in Persaud’s possession on the Essequibo Coast, Region Three.
In light of this, Magistrate Mohabir denied bail, and Persaud was remanded to prison. He is scheduled to return to court on January 28, 2025, for further proceedings.
