Former Toshao and captain of the Orealla water ambulance, 65-year-old Lewis Devair, tragically lost his life early this morning after the vessel he was operating crashed in the Corentyne River.
The News Desk understands that Devair had left Orealla on Friday evening to transport a sick child to the Skeldon Hospital. However, while returning to the village at approximately 05:00 hrs today, the water ambulance reportedly collided with a tree in the river.
Concerned family members and community officials launched a search after the vessel failed to return at the expected time. The search team later discovered the damaged vessel with Devair unresponsive at the scene. A health worker who was also aboard was found seriously injured.
The injured health worker was quickly transported to the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
