45-year-old Odit Persaud Thom of No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice was found motionless floating in a trench at No. 41 backdam which separates a rice field from the savannah earlier today.
The incident leading to his death took place between 08:00hrs on March 2nd and 12:30 on March 4th, 2024.
The News Desk understands that the decease took care of cattle in the backdam for several cattle farmers along the West Coast of Berbice. The deceased was staying at a camp located at Seafield Backdam, WCB, where the animals were being kept.
According to one of the cattle owners whose animals along with others were under the care of the decease were impounded at Weldaad Police Station on March 3rd, 2024 by a rice farmer. As such, the cattle farmer went into the backdam to look for the deceased but did not find him at the camp.
However, earlier today, he along with other cattle farmers continued their search and found the deceased motionless body floating in a trench at No. 41 backdam which separates the rice fields from the savannah.
The body was fished out by the police and found in a state of decomposition. It was observed that the deceased sustained chop wounds to both arms and the head. He had on a haversack on his back which contained toiletries and his ID card. The body was clad in a black jeans and black jersey.
The surrounding area was canvassed and a pair of adidas slippers and a black cap were found on the dam in the vicinity where the body was floating.
The scene was photographed and video recorded. The items found were retrieved by the ranks. The body is presently at Bailey Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy. Statements taken from persons who conducted the search and whose animals the decease cared for.
