Police are investigating a horrific accident that claimed the lives of two young men early Sunday morning on the No. 11 Public Road, East Coast Berbice.
The fatal crash occurred at around 01:40 hours on September 14, 2025, and involved motor car HC 4710, owned by Arvin Tyman, 36, of Sixth Street, Whim, Corentyne Berbice, and driven at the time by a 48-year-old man of Lancaster Village, Corentyne Berbice. The second vehicle was motor cycle CP 8880, owned and driven by 29-year-old Kris Ramphal of Fyrish Road, Corentyne Berbice, who had as his pillion rider 18-year-old Malcolm Pirtan of Fyrish Village, Corentyne Berbice. Both Ramphal and Pirtan tragically lost their lives in the accident.

Initial investigations revealed that the motor car was proceeding east along the northern drive lane at a normal rate of speed, while the motor cycle, which was allegedly without a headlight, was traveling in the opposite direction at a fast rate. Police said the motor cycle, with both occupants not wearing safety helmets, suddenly changed lanes from south to north, resulting in a violent collision despite the efforts of the car driver to avoid impact.
The force of the crash threw both Ramphal and Pirtan onto the northern side of the roadway, where they sustained severe injuries. Public-spirited citizens rushed to their aid and transported them in an unconscious condition to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Sadly, doctors on duty could only pronounce them dead on arrival.
The driver of the motor car remained on the scene and was later taken into custody at the Central Police Station. A breathalyzer test was administered, which showed readings of 4 and 5 micrograms of alcohol in his breath. He has since been placed in custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
Both bodies are now at a funeral home, awaiting post-mortem examinations as grieving relatives prepare for the painful task of saying their final goodbyes.
