A 25-year-old man from Lancaster Village, Corentyne has been remanded to prison after he was found guilty of causing the death of his girlfriend during a fatal accident last year.
Niraz Sukdeo appeared at the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where Magistrate Tuanna Hardy found him guilty of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the July 22, 2024, crash that claimed the life of his 18-year-old girlfriend, Bibi Aleah Ali. He was taken into custody and is scheduled to be sentenced next Wednesday.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 2:10 a.m. on the Kiltearn Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice. At the time, Sukdeo was driving motorcar PAF 6330, with Ali seated as a passenger. Both were Medical Technologists and residents of Lancaster Village.
According to police investigations, Sukdeo was proceeding north along the western drive lane at an alleged high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle. The car collided with a crane that was parked on the parapet before ending up in a canal on the opposite side of the road.
The impact flung Bibi Aleah Ali from the vehicle and into the canal. Both she and Sukdeo sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals by public-spirited citizens. Ali was pronounced dead on arrival at the Skeldon Public Hospital, while Sukdeo was admitted to Anamayah Memorial Hospital with multiple injuries.
Police launched an investigation into the incident, which led to Sukdeo being charged and placed on trial. After months of proceedings, the court has now found him culpable for his girlfriend’s death.
