Police are investigating an alleged case of discharging a loaded firearm with intent, which occurred on February 15, 2025, at approximately 03:12 hrs in Dukestown, Corriverton. The incident was reportedly committed against 29-year-old Daniel Jones, called “Duck,” a labourer from No. 51 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
The suspect, 41-year-old Hubert Byass, known as “Broomsie,” a resident of Dukestown, has since been arrested and is in police custody.
According to the victim, the conflict between him and the suspect stemmed from a prior altercation in mid-2024. He recalled that during a drinking session with friends near Munchies Bar in Corriverton, a misunderstanding escalated into a fight between himself and Byass. The suspect reportedly fled the scene that night, and the victim never saw him again. Jones did not report the incident to the police at the time.
On the morning of the incident, at around 03:00 hrs, Jones and three friends stopped at Staymond Food Shop in Dukestown after socializing in Corriverton. While standing outside, he noticed Byass approaching with a handgun in his hand. Byass allegedly pointed the firearm at him and ordered him to get on the ground.
Jones refused and told the suspect to do as he pleased. In response, Byass reportedly fired a single shot, hitting him in the left upper leg. Jones immediately fled towards the public road, at which point the suspect discharged two additional shots, which missed him.
Despite his injury, Jones managed to reach the car he had arrived in, and his friends drove him to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where he was examined and admitted for observation. However, he later took self-discharge.
Police questioned several persons in the area, who confirmed hearing gunshots, though no one could verify the identity of the shooter. Shortly after the incident, the suspect turned himself in at the Springlands Police Station, where he was arrested and placed in custody. He has since denied any involvement in the shooting.
Investigations are ongoing.
