A 62-year-old cyclist was killed in a fatal accident on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at approximately 10:00 hrs on the Bath Settlement Public Road, West Coast Berbice. The incident involved a minibus, #BAG 6537, driven by 36-year-old Baichan Boodhoo of Lot 104, Number 2 Settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, and an electric cycle ridden by the now-deceased Surajbali Seepersaud, a resident of Bath Settlement.
Investigations revealed that the minibus was proceeding east along the northern side of the public road when the cyclist, who was heading west on the southern side, reportedly turned north suddenly into the path of the vehicle. The bus’s right front collided with the cyclist, causing him to fall onto the road.
Seepersaud was picked up by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where he was admitted with head injuries and trauma to other parts of his body. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The police responded to the scene at about 10:07 hrs, led by an inspector and other ranks. Although the area was canvassed for CCTV footage, none was available. A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver returned negative results for alcohol.
The matter was reported to the police at approximately 10:05 hrs. The body of the deceased is currently at the Baileys Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the driver remains in custody as investigations continue.
