An altercation between two brothers and their neighbors escalated into a violent encounter on Tuesday afternoon, prompting police involvement and raising concerns among relatives about perceived injustices.
The incident occurred between 2:00 and 2:30 p.m. when Kevin Ramnarain, 24, and his younger brother, Anthony Ramnarain, 18, were reportedly working at a site in Nigg on the Corentyne. According to eyewitness accounts, members of the neighboring family, identified as Shakal and Navin, allegedly entered the Ramnarain brothers’ worksite, armed with pieces of wood, and initiated an attack over a longstanding grievance. In response, the Ramnarain brothers fought back, reportedly striking their attackers to defend themselves.
Following the incident, the Ramnarain brothers reported the matter to the police. Both were subsequently arrested and taken to a medical facility for treatment of injuries sustained during the altercation before being placed in police custody. Meanwhile, members of the Silvena family reportedly sought medical attention at a private medical institution.
A relative of the Ramnarain brothers claimed that the police initially demanded $100,000 bail for each brother. However, this amount was reportedly reduced to $50,000 and later to $20,000 each, which was eventually accepted as station bail.
The relative further alleged that this is not the first time such incidents have occurred, asserting that previous altercations have never led to court action. “This has been happening for years, and no justice has ever been served. It will continue until someone loses their life,” the relative remarked, expressing frustration with what they perceive as a cycle of unresolved conflict.
