Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred around 23:20 hrs on Thursday, December 4, 2025, along the Alness Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice, in which a drunk driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle, resulting in the death of his passenger.
The incident involved motor car PWW 6986, owned and driven by a 31-year-old man of John’s Settlement, Corentyne. His passenger, 30-year-old Davendra Sydney of Lot 232 Bush Lot Village, Corentyne, tragically lost his life.
According to initial investigations, the car was proceeding east along the northern driving lane at an alleged fast rate when the driver lost control. The vehicle reportedly turned turtle, causing Sydney to be flung onto the southern grass parapet, while the car came to a halt on a bridge.
Both men sustained injuries and were picked up by public-spirited citizens, who rushed them to the Port Mourant Public Hospital. Sydney was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty. His body has since been taken to Ramoo’s Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The driver was admitted for observation with bruises about his body.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver returned readings of 77 and 74 micrograms, more than double Guyana’s legal limit of 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 ml of breath.
Investigations are continuing.
