The intoxicated driver involved in the fatal accident that claimed the life of 30-year-old Devendra Sydney on the Alness Public Road on Thursday was arrested at his home earlier today after reportedly taking self-discharge from two medical institutions without police knowledge.
According to information received, the 31-year-old driver of John’s Settlement, Port Mourant, who was admitted at the New Amsterdam Hospital after the crash, took self-discharge and transferred himself to a private medical facility on the Corentyne. He later discharged himself again and went home without any police ranks being stationed to guard him, a standard procedure for persons implicated in serious offences while hospitalized.
When contacted, Region Six Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus said he was unaware of the situation but immediately reached out to his Traffic Officer, who confirmed what had transpired. Shortly after, The News Desk was informed that ranks from the Whim Police Station visited the driver’s residence and arrested him. He is now in police custody assisting with the investigation.

The fatal accident occurred at about 23:20 hrs on Thursday on the Alness Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice. The driver was reportedly proceeding east along the northern drive lane at a fast rate of speed when he lost control of motor car PWW 6986. The vehicle turned turtle, causing Sydney, the occupant, to be flung onto the southern grass parapet. The car eventually came to a halt on a bridge.
Both men sustained injuries and were picked up by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital. Sydney was pronounced dead on arrival, while the driver was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver recorded readings of 77 and 74 micrograms, confirming he was well above the legal limit.
Meanwhile, the family of the victim is pleading for justice and is calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.
