An electrical fault has been identified as the cause of a fire that completely destroyed a three-storey wooden and concrete building along Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam, on Saturday evening.
Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald told The News Desk on Sunday morning that the blaze originated on the western side of the building. He noted that nothing was salvaged in the fire.
Information received indicates that the fire started shortly after 21:00 hrs.

A security guard reportedly observed smoke emanating from the building and immediately alerted a neighbouring resident. The neighbour, who gave his name as Amerally, said he quickly removed vehicles parked near the fence of the affected structure before contacting the Guyana Fire Service.
Amerally noted that by the time firefighters arrived, the building was already fully engulfed in flames.
When The News Desk arrived at the scene on Saturday night, a large crowd had gathered as firefighters were seen battling the blaze. Ranks of the Guyana Police Force were also present, managing the crowd and ensuring public safety.
Investigations are ongoing.
