Over 100 homes in Crabwood Creek and Moleson Creek are now being connected to electricity following the direct intervention of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali. Earlier this year, during a visit to Crabwood Creek on the Corentyne, residents raised concerns about the lack of electricity in several areas. President Ali immediately committed to resolving the issue, promising that those without access to electricity would soon be connected.
Since that visit, significant progress has been made. Nearly 40 homes in Grant 1779 Backland, Crabwood Creek, have already been connected, benefiting 40 families. Poles and wiring have been installed in Grant 1805 and Grant 1803, where another 70 families are set to benefit. Additionally, in Moleson Creek, about 20 households are now on the verge of receiving electricity, as the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) has completed pole planting and wiring in the area.
Residents are expressing their gratitude for the government’s swift action. Nazmoon Yassin, a 42-year-old resident of Grant 1779 Backland, shared her joy at receiving electricity for the first time in over 10 years of living in the area. “We raised the issue with the president, and the very next day, GPL workers came. They planted poles, installed wires, and eventually, we got the transformer. Now we finally have electricity,” she said with excitement.

For Yassin, the connection is life-changing. Previously, she relied on solar panels, which offered limited power and often required her to unplug appliances during the night due to a lack of energy. Reflecting on her years without electricity, she expressed deep gratitude, acknowledging how the president’s intervention has transformed her life and the community.
Similarly, 51-year-old Olswald Phoenix was connected just days ago and is excited about the new possibilities. “I never thought we’d get electricity here after so many unsuccessful efforts,” Phoenix admitted. “Now, we can finally have fridges and keep our drinks cold—something we had to go to the shop for.”

Moleson Creek resident, 54-year-old Royanand Persaud, also shared his anticipation for the benefits electricity will bring. Growing up in the area, he had long hoped for this day. “I’ve been waiting since I was a small boy for us to get electricity. It’s especially important now for the children, so they can do their schoolwork in the evenings.”

These electrification efforts are part of a broader national agenda spearheaded by President Ali, who has mandated that all communities near the national electricity grid, and meeting the population criteria, be integrated into the power network. The project not only brings light to homes but also signals a brighter future for the residents of Crabwood Creek and Moleson Creek, enhancing their quality of life and supporting their development.
