The Enmore Regional Hospital, a cutting-edge medical facility along the East Coast of Demerara, is set to bring substantial healthcare advancements and employment opportunities to the region, creating over 1,000 jobs once completed. President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali announced this during a project inspection on Monday, emphasizing the government’s dual focus on healthcare improvement and job creation.
“For this facility, we’ll need more than 1,000 staff to manage it 24 hours a day,” President Ali stated, highlighting the scale and impact of the project. Staffing needs will include doctors, nurses, and specialized medical technicians, many of whom are currently being trained through local programs and the government’s partnership with U.S.-based Coursera Inc. Thousands of nurses are benefiting from online training, while initiatives like the Nursing Assistant and Pharmacy Assistant programs are equipping new talent to meet growing demands.
Scheduled for completion early next year, the $6.6 billion hospital will be equipped with world-class digital technology and built to meet European and American standards. “This is a high-quality facility up to international standards,” President Ali noted. Key features will include a 24-hour Accident and Emergency department, a fully equipped laboratory, advanced imaging services, two modern operating theatres, and a birthing room.
In line with enhancing patient experience, the hospital will provide private rooms, each with five beds and individual washroom facilities. “It is not the big open-ward system anymore. Basically, everything that Georgetown Hospital offers will be here,” President Ali added, underscoring the hospital’s capacity to deliver comprehensive medical services to residents along the East Coast.
Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, who joined the President on the site visit, outlined the facility’s staffing needs. These will include around 30 doctors, 400 nurses, 400 nursing assistants, as well as essential clerical and technical support staff.
Constructed by China CAMC Engineering Co. Ltd (CAMC), a subsidiary of Sinomach, the Enmore Regional Hospital is one of several new healthcare facilities under development. Additional hospitals are underway in Diamond on the East Bank Demerara, Lima (Region Two), Bath (Region Five), and No. 75 Village (Region Six). A dedicated paediatric and maternal hospital is also being developed at Goedverwagting.
