Attorney-at-Law Bernard da Silva successfully represented 52-year-old businessman Rohan Narine, also known as Prem Narine, in the Essequibo Assizes before Justice Peter Hugh. The trial, which commenced yesterday, November 19, 2024, concluded earlier today with a unanimous verdict of not guilty from the jury after less than an hour of deliberation.
Narine, a resident of Cullen Public Road, Essequibo Coast, was charged on November 18, 2024, with the rape of a female under Section 3(3) of the Sexual Offences Act, Chapter 8:03. He initially appeared at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Esther Sam, where the charge was read to him. Narine was not required to plead and was granted bail in the sum of $300,000.
The case was initially adjourned to February 7, 2024, for the disclosure of statements after the accused was charged with the offence on January 24, 2024. However, with the trial now concluded and a verdict delivered, Narine has been acquitted of all charges.
