A tragic accident in the early hours of Saturday, September 14, 2024, claimed the life of a 28-year-old West Coast Berbice resident following a collision at Cottage, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
According to police reports, the fatal incident occurred at approximately 03:00 hrs on the public road. The accident involved a motorcar, registration number PJJ 2006, driven by 23-year-old Shakeem Booker of Seafield, West Coast Berbice. Initial investigations revealed that the car was speeding eastward along Cottage public road when Booker lost control. The vehicle veered off the road onto the southern grass parapet, crashing into a concrete and mesh fence before colliding with a utility pole.
As a result of the impact, Booker and three passengers—36-year-old Ron Robertson of No. 42 Village, West Coast Berbice; 28-year-old Collin Dowden of Lot 2 Belle Vue, West Coast Berbice; and 17-year-old Tyreece McDonald of Seafield, West Coast Berbice—sustained injuries.
The injured parties were rushed to Mahaicony Public Hospital, where doctors pronounced Collin Dowden dead on arrival. The driver, along with Robertson and McDonald, was treated for their injuries and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical care.
Dowden’s body has since been transported to Bailey’s Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
