Police are investigating the death of 34-year-old Mitchell Daniel Benn of Lot 203 Area R, Ankerville, Port Mourant, whose body was discovered near his submerged motor pickup, GRR 9936, in a canal along a dam at Babu John, Port Mourant, earlier today.
According to reports, the motor pickup was heading west along the access dam at Babu John at an alleged fast rate when the driver lost control. The vehicle veered off the dam, ended up in the canal in a northwestern direction, and became submerged.

Benn was later removed from the vehicle in an unconscious state and transported to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His mother, 55-year-old Marcell Harry, recounted to The News Desk that her last interaction with her son was on Tuesday when he returned to Berbice after a business trip to Georgetown. She explained that a friend visited her this morning to inquire if she had heard about an incident involving her son. After saying no, she was informed that Benn’s pickup had toppled into a canal and he was missing.
“So I decided to go. I catch a car, and when I reach there, the next brother was in the trench looking for him, thinking that he could be pinned down in the vehicle, but he was at the side of the trench,” Harry shared.
She further revealed that based on the condition of the body, her son appeared to have been dead for some time, as the body had already begun to swell.
Benn was remembered as a loving father to his three children and a caring husband. He leaves behind his wife, children, and other grieving family members.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
