A Crabwood Creek man is now in police custody after confessing to the fatal stabbing of 40-year-old fisherman Umar Muqthar Jumai, also known as ‘Muggy’. The alleged murder occurred sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning at Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.
Jumai’s body was discovered around 08:00 hrs on Monday by a labourer in the area. He was slumped over in a drain on the eastern side of the street, with his feet submerged in water. Upon making the discovery, the labourer alerted the neighbourhood police, and law enforcement officials responded to the scene.
Detectives who examined the body found a 3cm stab wound on the abdomen. Jumai was dressed in a brown shirt and green trousers. A cutlass and a ‘Rambo’ knife were found tucked into his waistband. His body was later taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital, where Dr. Henry pronounced him dead.
Several hours later, at approximately 15:00 hrs, police interviewed the suspect, 38-year-old Nigel Garnette, known as ‘Nancy’. During questioning, Garnette admitted to stabbing Jumai once in the abdomen. His confession was recorded on video, and he also provided a caution statement to investigators. A video walkthrough of the crime scene was conducted with him as part of the ongoing investigation.
The suspect remains in police custody as further inquiries continue.
