The government has not only fulfilled its manifesto promises but has also launched several new initiatives aimed at transforming Guyana’s economic landscape. This was highlighted by Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, during a community engagement with sugar workers in Canefield, Canje, Berbice, this afternoon.

Minister Mustapha noted that significant progress has been made in key sectors such as agriculture, health, education, and infrastructure, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to national development.

“When you look at where we are today, less than four and a half years in office, we have delivered on all the promises we made to the people. And now, we are undertaking new initiatives. Take the Palmyra development plan, for example, that wasn’t in our manifesto, but if you pass there now, you can see the massive transformation happening. By the end of this year, the entire area will be completely transformed,” he said.

He also spoke about the government’s efforts to revitalize the sugar industry through the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo). Recognizing the economic and social impact of the industry’s decline under the previous APNU+AFC administration, the government has invested heavily in rehabilitating sugar estates, rehiring displaced workers, and modernizing production.

The closure of sugar estates in the past devastated many communities, leading to widespread unemployment and economic hardship. By reopening and upgrading these estates, the government has not just restoring jobs but also revitalizing entire communities that depend on the industry.

“Almost $12 billion was spent to reopen the Rose Hall Estate. I remember when I first visited Region Six, the entire factory was in a state of disrepair—equipment was dilapidated, and the facility was in complete ruin. We had to start from scratch,” Minister Mustapha recalled.

Turning to the rice industry, he emphasized the administration’s proactive approach in addressing challenges faced by farmers. Regular community engagements provide a platform for farmers to voice their concerns while allowing the government to offer practical solutions and support to boost production and sustainability.

Efforts to secure international markets for rice farmers have led to record-breaking exports, with production surpassing 700,000 metric tons. The non-traditional agriculture sector is also expanding, with fruits and vegetables growing by 11% last year. Investments in infrastructure, irrigation systems, and new technology have strengthened Guyana’s position as a regional leader in food production.

Minister Mustapha also highlighted the country’s unprecedented infrastructure boom. Hundreds of new roads, bridges, and highways have been built nationwide, significantly improving connectivity and accessibility, particularly in Region Six. The government’s infrastructure development strategy not only enhances transportation networks but also creates economic opportunities for local businesses and workers.

Additionally, major investments in drainage and irrigation systems such as the construction of 19 new pump stations are helping to support agriculture and mitigate the effects of climate change. These projects are crucial for sustainable development and flood prevention.

Looking ahead, the government remains committed to building a resilient and diversified economy. While the oil and gas sector continues to thrive, equal focus is being placed on expanding non-oil industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism to ensure long-term economic stability. Minister Mustapha also highlighted the government’s ongoing financial relief programs, including cash grants aimed at supporting farmers, sugar workers, and vulnerable communities.

With strategic planning and visionary leadership, Guyana is undergoing a complete transformation. The rapid pace of development, coupled with sound economic policies, positions the country as a regional powerhouse. Over the next five years, the government aims to further strengthen the economy, enhance public services, and ensure that every Guyanese benefits from the nation’s prosperity.
