The Government of Guyana disbursed approximately $437 million to 22 farmers and three millers from Region Two earlier today as payment for outstanding sums owed from a 2015 rice deal with Panama.
Speaking at the payout ceremony, Agriculture Minister Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha criticized the former government for failing to ensure farmers and millers received their payments, highlighting the challenges they faced over the years.
Minister Mustapha stated that while in opposition, the PPP/C government pledged to recover the funds and support Guyana’s agriculture sector. Earlier this year, the Government of Guyana, through the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) and the Ministry of Legal Affairs, resolved the matter with Panamanian officials.
Following the settlement, the outstanding sum was transferred to the GRDB accounts for disbursement to those owed.
This payout is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the agriculture sector and ensuring fairness for all stakeholders.
