Guyana’s thriving coconut industry is poised for further expansion as the government sets its sights on achieving an additional 1,000 acres in coconut production by the close of 2023. This strategic move contributes to the nation’s commitment to diversify its agricultural sector and solidify coconut cultivation as one of its significant crops.
Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, shared that this year, Guyana acquired 13,000 high-yielding Brazilian green dwarf coconut seed nuts at a cost of $12 million, signaling a proactive effort to boost coconut production. Another shipment of 13,000 coconuts is expected, with nurseries under construction across the country to support this initiative.
Since assuming office in August 2020, Minister Mustapha noted an impressive increase of over 5,000 acres in coconut cultivation. He expressed optimism about achieving an additional 1,000 acres this year, attributing the growth to heightened interest in the coconut industry.
While currently having coconut nurseries in multiple regions, the government plans to expand this initiative to other areas, recognizing the excellent potential for coconut cultivation throughout Guyana.
Minister Mustapha highlighted the value-added aspects of coconut waste material, noting its use in mulching and other agriculture-related activities. The introduction of fiber machines further maximizes coconut byproducts, supporting farmers’ groups across the country in various applications.
To accelerate growth and provide valuable insights, two specialists from India recently conducted a study in Guyana. A comprehensive report is expected in the coming weeks, and Minister Mustapha looks forward to considering the recommendations outlined.
Expressing the vast potential for Guyanese farmers to tap into significant markets, Minister Mustapha emphasized the interest from the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. The coconut industry’s multifaceted approach, including sustainable practices and value addition, positions Guyana as a key player in the global coconut market.
